How to Start Training

Any suggestions where I start would start learning how to train? Where I go from there?

I'm agile and swift and I think I have the necessary skills, but Im unsure how to start. Currently I've been running, and jumping. Also could you help with tips on performing flips and movements?

Hey Coty,

The most important part of training, is that you understand Parkour. Try the 3W article series which explains the basics of Who, What and Why.

Once you understand what Parkour is, and how it can benefit you then it's time to start training. There are three areas of training that you need to focus on, movement, strength and endurance.

Movement training is the area practitioners spend most time on, consisting of drilling common movements, practising thinking quickly to produce flow and linking movements, and looking at what movements you could use to overcome specific obstacles. To begin this, you should start with practising some basic movements.

Strength training (also known as conditioning) is also a big part of Parkour. It?s necessary to improve your body composition, strength and power in order to be efficient with your movements. Conditioning is usually body weight exercises, like push-ups, pull-ups, sit-ups etc... You can start off by doing three sets of maximum reps every other day.

Finally endurance training is an area that many practitioners neglect. Endurance is important to be able to run or move for a long time. It requires cardiovascular fitness, and is best improved by running, swimming or cycling.

In short Coty, what I suggest is starting practising the basic movements and working up. Doing conditioning sets every other day, and running regularly. As you improve you can up the level of intensity with both your strength and endurance training, and start to look at more difficult obstacles with your movement.
