Overcoming Fear

by Jordan
(AR, USA)

Hey, my name is Jordan, I started parkour a few months ago and I've been learning quickly. A trick I'm scared of trying is the kong vault. I jog up to it and as I'm about to do it I get frightened of catching my feet. What should I do when I have a fear?

Overcoming your fear!
by: Drew Taylor

Hey Jordan,

Sounds like you've got a bit of a knack for parkour ;)

You mentioned the trick 'kong'. When training parkour, it's important to bare in mind that originally parkour wasn't just about completing lists of tricks, instead it's about relating movements and techniques to situations to over come obstacles. Therefore it would be better to refer to these 'tricks' as movements or techniques if you want to go by the book! Originally the movement you're referring to was called a cat pass, or passment.

Onto fear...

Fear is an important instinct, as it stops you from dying fundamentally. However, your brain get's confused when you're trying to perform a seemingly dangerous movement and tries to stop you from injuring yourself.

If you've practised and trained enough to trust that you can perform the cat pass without getting hurt, then this fear can be blocked out simply by believing in yourself.

If you're finding you're not at a point where you trust yourself to complete the movement, then you need to be doing movements that will build up your confidence and ability enough to do so. (ie. different vaults)

As for catching your feet, this is highly unlikely if you've got the right technique, ask your friends to help you with this.

Have fun, and stay safe!
